[The unfamiliar word 'coercive conversion' has become an issue in our society since pastor Jin Yong Sik confined Jeong Baek Hyang to a mental hospital for the purpose of conversion in 2008. And he was sentenced in the court. At that time, pastor Jin was in charge of heresy counseling for Christian Council of Korea (CCK). Churches of existing denomination and officials who are running coercive conversion programs devise a way to force those who refuse the program. And those who do this are the families of the subjects who believe other denominations so called "cult" and the subjects are being targeted. Families who believe 100% of those who propose coercive conversion programs learn that they do not communicate with the subjects targeted. And the victim complained of imprisonment refusing conversation mobilizing lies and coercive measure and said "They force coercive conversion called 'heresy counseling'." The coercive conversion program produces family breakdown. Here is one who has been damaged in this way. This is a story of a strong young man currently attending university. I went to a coercive conversion program around last fall. I had only heard about it and I thought it was a story of different world. However, surprisingly it happened to me. I started to attend Shincheonji church from July 2019. On September 23, my parents found out that I was attending Shincheonji church. Without checking a matter of fact, they quietly prepared a coercive conversion program by being drawn by the internet and the phone call of a coercive conversion pastor. The content of the coercive conversion pastor's call is ▲ since people from Shincheonji can come, remodel the house to block access or seek a third place that cannot be reached ▲ in order to move the sone to the place of confinement without any doubt, pretend being urgent saying a relative has an accident ▲ the way to take away a mobile phone and ▲ the way to make the subject agree with a coercive conversion program. One day, I was taken to a coercive conversion program at dawn after time passed without me knowing anything. The following is the case log. 

◆ Monday, September 30, 2019...  family lies and kidnapping

It was 6 am. My mother woke me up and said that my grandmother has a car accident and it is urgent. So, we need to go to the hospital in Yang San ASAP.

My mother called a taxi shaking, crying and babbling. My parents and I were going out of the house to catch a taxi. When I went down, my sister who is living in Seoul came down to Busan and was waiting for us. My mother pretended that she left her cell phone and asked me to lend. My mother was talking on the phone with my sister and went back to the house to find her cell phone. 

And she pretended that she left my cell phone accidentally. After that, we took a taxi with my phone taken out. The taxi was going to somewhere. I thought we were going to the hospital where my grandmother was. But a taxi arrived at the front of a house in a remote place with a paddy field around. I found out later that the place was an island. At that time, I was so surprised and in a daze. So, I thought my grandmother came here and did not doubt. When I entered the house, there were a lot of households that I used at my home. The house was a small house with a living room and a room. 

And I asked my father and said "When is my grandmother coming?" And my father said "come here and sit down." Only then I noticed something strange. I asked my sister to lend me a cell phone to check something. And she said "Why, what are you trying to do?" and never lend me a phone.

First, I tried to talk to my family. I figured out why I came here and explained how I went to Shincheonji church and about Shincheonji church. I said what my parents try to do now is confinement that restrains my freedom of body. Let's go out and talk. However, my family's request was to take a coercive conversion program. 

My family members said "If I don't take the course, we would stay for a week and even a month. I said that I would like to take the course in an open place rather than a confined place. And since I was sick at that time, I asked to send me a hospital. But I saw the medicine delivered. 

After that, I tried to escape once. However, my arms and legs were caught by my parents and my sister. I figured they would never let me go unless I take it. So, I said I would take it. Instead, when I took a course, I asked them to send me home. On the condition that they would finish it in the morning, my sister contacted the evangelist who is in charge of a coercive conversion program and made an appointment for the next morning. 

◆ Tuesday, October 1, 2019... Bullying of the evangelist in confinement

In the morning, around 10 o'clock, a person called an evangelist came and started a coercive conversion program with my family present at the scene. Until 14 o'clock, the harassed me with the materials they prepared for four hours without rest. And I was able to rest around lunch time. 

While eating meals with my family and the evangelist, what the evangelist says was different from the promise my family made with me. The evangelist said that they would continue till 17 o'clock which is 3 more hours. Also, I had to take at least 5 times a week which is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. 

Originally, my body was in a bad condition. I felt so bad after I was brainwashed for 4 hours. So, I begged them to send me to a hospital. However, the evangelist and my parents who received an order didn't let me go. 

Finally, when my family is eating and the level of guard is low, I kicked out the door and managed to escape. With the help of a few people, I was able to escape the island. 

For the next few days, I left home and lived. What I learned later was that my family also struggled over what to do with me and my mother left home and came back. 

A coercive conversion program which only hurts our family and leaves nothing was finished like that. However, at home, atmosphere of being peaceful was disappeared and we feel a little uncomfortable and awkward. 

As I went through this, at first, I would not believe if my grandmother is sick. I became traumatized thinking of the incident. The coercive conversion pastor's trick is vicious. 

Like voice phishing, they made me lose my judgement lying my family is sick. My mother left home and came after I escaped from the place where I was imprisoned. My father was staying home alone. And my sister left work at that time. However, no one compensated for this damage.

At that time, I had the regret towards my family for this incident. However, it was because of the money grabbing by coercive conversion pastors consequently. I am so upset that my family has such an irreplaceable painful memory. 

At that time, I was dragged to an unknown island under unprotected circumstance. I was so scared since I didn't know what would happen. I feel so sand and terrible that this thing is happening in Korea in this era of 2020. Fortunately, I escaped in two days and living life. However, at this time and this moment, in some places, someone is making money under the name of a coercive conversion program. And it worries me. 

I sincerely hope that incidents like me and Gu Ji In who lost her life in a coercive conversion program will no longer take place on this earth.

His parents fed sleeping pills to Lee to force him into coercive conversion program. He became fainted and kidnapped to a pension being handcuffed. What was waiting for him was the consent form to agree participating in coercive conversion program and his family who was outrageous. And, there was a coercive conversion pastor behind. He recently had to come up with a nightmare he didn't want to think about due to Coronavirus crisis while being criticized for being heresy. The following is Lee's appeal.

“An ordinary college student until his mother met a coercive conversion pastor”

Recently, due to the corona19 crisis, Shincheonji church is i n a lot of controversy and damage caused by fake news. When looking at the witch hunt and the damage caused by the fake news towards Shincheonji, the nightmare about 4 years ago comes back. 

I am a member of Shincheonji church who attended Shincheonji church since January 2015 and have heard that Shincheonji is heresy, crime group and anti-national, anti-religious group. Our family was family where discord never stopped and the fights between parents never ceased until high school and eventually divorced. 

However, when I was back in college, peace at home was restored. My mother encouraged me to believe in me and we were peaceful and ordinary. I was the second son of this one family. 

I no longer wanted to lose the peace of my family. Also, I was a believer who hoped my whole family live together in Heaven. 

And I was more and more devoted to my studies practicing faith at Shincheonji church. Like the words to become the light and salt of the world, I have determined to prepare to take responsibility both my parents and economy in the future. I was a very ordinary college student who had been working harder and harder at college getting a senior scholarship from college. 

On 2nd half of 2015, within 3 months after I joined Shincheonji church, my parents found out that I was attending Shincheonji church. And my parents eventually met a pastor who is in charge of coercive conversion program. 

To be precise, I met the counselor call 'Joo' at Ansan Sang Nok church. He deceived my mother as if Shincheonji is the most evil of the pseudo heretics. Due to this, my mother became even more violent. 

In addition, my mother became more violent than ever by meeting a businessman of coercive conversion. Then, the incident broke out on January 16, 2016. My mother fed me sleeping pills and bound my limbs with handcuffs taking me to a place of coercive conversion program. 

My mother took me to a pension in Yeong Heung Do Island, Incheon. In that place, my mother looked at me and said "If you are converted, you will leave here.".  My mother handcuffed my arm with her arm to force coercive conversion program saying "This is the only string of love that connects you and me.". 

In doing so, she did not hesitate to say curse words about Shincheonji and chairman of Shicheonji treating me like an animal. She forced me a coercive conversion screaming saying "Lee (chairman of Shincheonji) son of a bitch."

Who made my mother like this? Until my mother met a coercive conversion pastor, she didn't swear words like this. Why our peace between families should be broken just for the reason that I am attending Shincheonji? 

Moreover, I had to be forcibly taken to coercive conversion program without graduating from college. My mother also said "It is more important to take you out of Shincheonji rather than studying." So, I had to drop out of the school. 

Being handcuffed, confined, kidnapped, imprisoned, forced to drop out of the school, ruining my family and things that might have happened to the gang happed to me. 

Who is it for? It is because of a businessman of coercive conversion. After about 5 days, I was forced to sign the consent from because I couldn't win my parents and coercive conversion program had been started. 

About 12 days have passed. If I show any disobedience, my parents and my sister made me lay down bending over my arms and forced me to receive coercive conversion program. 

A coercive conversion pastor kept scolding me saying 'Don't play with me.' even though he was talking nonsense.

About 27 days has passed. And I decided to escape. However, my parents chased me with the police and the police dog and I was caught by them. 

At that time, I saw a delinquency of duties by the police at Yeong Heung police station. I showed them a bruised wound on my butt saying "Please save me, please take me out. I was confined and handcuffed.". The police said "Don't you see why they are doing this? I also received corporal punishment when I was young. This is a religious problem. It is a family problem and this is none of my business." and left without doing nothing.

Do you think this is a lie? I have a photographic evidence taken at that time. 

Finally, after 28 days passed, because I was kicked out by my parents, I ended up wandering from place to place.  

28 days which is trauma for me... Still, under the name of heresy counseling Chongshin university states saying "If it is Shincheonji which is heresy, kidnap, confine and assault is allowed." Even in the media, there are replies saying "Person who leak their personal information needs to be rewarded rather than punished." When I read those replies, I am still upset. 

When I think of those who are still suffering from human rights abused like me, I am upset. 

Coercive conversion is a matter of human rights. Please help me so that there are no more victims like me.

Lim Jin yi (27, female) was kidnapped by her parents after drinking a drink containing sleeping pills on January 4, 2015. And, she received a brainwashing education going back and forth between Guri church and pension. Her wrists were handcuffed in an attempt to escape and suffered assault and aggression while resisting. After that, she exposed the fact of the coercive conversion program in June of the same year. But her damage was covered without receiving much attention from the society. Meanwhile, she had her own family but the damage caused by coercive conversion program is currently ongoing. Lim's husband recently released a statement about current situation he felt through Human Right Association for Victims of Coercive Conversion Programs. The following is a full text of the statements.

I am the husband of a victim who was subjected to a coercive conversion program in 2015.

Sometime ago, at the press conference of Chairman of Shincheonji, the person who has trampled the human rights by revealing my wife's identity in front of many people holding a loudspeaker and mocking the public with slander and dissemination is my wife's mother

She used Corona19 crisis and insisted saying that Shincheonji made my wife run away. However, on last 28th of January, she found out the location of my wife's loving house and ran away after being photographed on a CCTV camera. And then, she spread false fact saying "My daughter has been missing for five years so I don't know where she lives. My daughter was exposed to corona dangers in Shincheonji dormitory."

First of all, I'm going to post a piece of writing which was written at the time my wife was subjected to a coercive conversion program. 

- I became unconscious after drinking a drink containing sleeping pills around January 4, 2015. And I started to receive a coercive conversion program in the studio near Guri church which is run by Pastor Shin. When I opened my eyes, I was in a strange room and the door was locked. I resisted hitting the wall and asking help. But my father started hitting my face. Upon hearing this sound, the residents called the police. And I was transferred to Guri church. 

I shouted for help in the process of getting on the vehicle. However, church officials and my father said I was going to the mental hospital. I tried to escape from the church twice and failed. So, program officials decided to move the place to a neighboring pension after seeing my escape. 

From 9 am to 11 pm, they kept me from moving and brainwashed their own doctrine. Unless I admit it, education didn't end. Meanwhile, when I accepted their opinion, they said I was converted. And then, they sent me home from January 10th and ordered me to continue the program at their church. 

The next day, while moving to the church, a police officer received a police report and was dispatched. However, coercive conversion pastor told my parents to kidnap me. They grabbed my hair and dragged me into the car. At that time, the security of the building witnessed the scene and reported a kidnapping. After my parents found out this, they moved me to a deep mountain in Yangpyeong. In a small space from 1 pm to 8 pm, there was an unexpected violence and assault by my parents. When my parents found out that the police had tracked my location, my parents covered the license plate with the blinder which is provided by coercive conversion pastor. I was transferred to a neighboring pension and coercive conversion pastor handed over handcuff and a blindfold to my parents. I was terribly shaking and I couldn't see anything because my eyes were blindfolded. 

While imprisoned from the 12th to the 15th, I was assaulted with handcuffs in my hands and they didn't feed me saying I would lose my strength if I am starved. When I went to the restroom, they made me to go to the restroom handcuffing with my father. I felt shame and my tear dropped. I even felt I want to die. 

After that, coercive conversion pastor threatened and forced me to write a memorandum which includes consent to attend program along with protective custody request to parents. 

I was moved to Guri church again with my eyes blindfolded. Those who enforced the coercive conversion program said that they were playing a main role in the church. The next day, the police called my mother saying they had a report. My mother threatened me to say I am ok. I was able to answer the phone when the police requested to hear my voice on the phone. Meanwhile, I went to the corner of the church and asked come quickly as I was kidnapped, imprisoned and assaulted. 

When the police come to the door of the church, church officials threatened me to tell that I couldn't come to the door and I am doing well with my parents. 

Then suddenly, they cried and said "We were caught by the police because of you." And then, they shoot fake videos of me staying safe and presented to the police. However, the video was not sent. During the process, the police entered the church for confirmation. I was able to get out of the church with the police who saw the situation.

Are those actions that can be done to a child as a parent?

My father was abusive saying "If anyone tries to escape from the fence of my family, I will drag them into the fence regardless of any means and methods." And, he often verbally abused me.

In a normal family, it is hard to imagine what parents did to their daughters. Their daughter is living in hell day after day with extreme stress from her parents. My wife's parents have committed terrible crimes and protests with false facts and all kinds of groundless slander. As a result of this, my wife's heart is broken down and having unspeakable suffer such as gastritis, enteritis, stomach cramps, stomach ulcers, shingles, personal evasion, anger and extreme depression. So, as her husband, I had no choice but to leave this article. 

I am still thinking that I want to go to my wife's parents and pay back against what they did to my wife. Parents are responsible to educate children for their independent lives. However, they are deceiving many people with all kinds of lies and bury their child from society because their daughter who married and have her own family attend Shincheonji and believe in a different religion. 

Also, I deplore the fact that human rights abuses are committed by the parents who is controlled by coercive conversion pastor only for money. I just hope this fact is known to many people. 

I believe that if we endure the time of this breathtaking, dark long tunnel, a bright light will come to us. I hope that all of the victims who have suffered too hard physically and mentally due to coercive conversion program.

Young man who was strong enough to study in the Department of Physical Education at the graduate school was not an exceptional for coercive conversion program. 'More powerful measure' was mobilized. Six hooligans were hired and showed cruelty choking when resisting.  He had to take the coercive conversion program forcibly at the studio with 4 hooligans present. Pastor Kwon who was forcing him to take the program processed it even after pastor Kwon saw all the situations and stayed natural. Lee Seung Hwan sent to a SOS note to refuse to take coercive conversion and declared independence to his parents. However, his parents are protesting that Lee ran away because of religion. 2 episodes of article interviewed by Lee will be posted.

◆ On Jan. 20, 21:00 coercive conversion program begins accompanied by mobilization of hooligans

While meeting a friend outside, I was told by my mother to come home quickly. my mother kept saying "Come home." especially on that day. I asked "What's going on?". However, my mother said I would know when I came. 

I felt strange, so I went home with my friends. When I arrived at the front of the house, my mother was on the 1st floor. I told my friends to wait for me hear the house and I went home with my mother. My mother was touching her cell phone behind me all the way home and she seemed nervous. 

I was about to enter my room feeling my mother's behavior was strange and heard someone running to me from the living room. Six sturdy men jumped on me coming into the room and strangled me. I fainted for a few minutes under the condition what I was not able to use may hands and feet. 

◆ On Jan. 21 01:00~03:00 moving to the studio in the middle of the night

After waking up, there were six hooligans sitting in my room. They forcibly took my cell phone and kept me from going outside. 

They threatened me verbally and physically saying "You cannot go out of here. After all, you have no choice but to listen to the program (coercive conversion program). Would you? or would you not?".

I inevitably said "I understand.". Meanwhile, my friends who were waiting outside came home because I didn't come out. My mother lied to my friends saying "He suddenly ran out after hearing his grandmother sent to the hospital. So, he isn't home.". 

One of my friends among them experienced coercive conversion. So, he felt that the situation was the same as his case at the time and reported it to the police. 

Afterwards, police officers from Geoje 2dong district in Jeonje Gu Busan came and my friend requested them to show my face. However, the police said "Just stay. We will take care of it." And the police came to my parents. 

My parents lied again saying "My son has no problem." and the police went back down to the first floor without checking my face. After the police left, the hooligans kept threatened me saying " Is the person who reported to the police from Shincheonji church? What made them come here?" I was very upset and felt unprotected at the fact that even the police didn't help me in this situation. At around 3:00 AM, my parents grabbed my arm and moved to the parking lot being surrounded by hooligans. And, we arrived at the studio in Hae Un Dae.

◆ On Jan. 22, confinement in the surveillance of 4 hooligans

Inside the studio, my mother, me and 4 hooligans stayed together. One of hooligans monitored me in front of the room where I was sleeping, another was placed in front of the front door and two were placed in the living room to watch me. 

I felt so frustrated facing this situation and told my mother "Why did you do this even hiring hooligans? Why not do it without discussing even if we can have a conversation?".

My mother said " I don't know anything about the Bible But it is not acceptable to go to Shincheonji." I asked to my mother "How did you trust pastor Kwon deceiving md and hire hooligans in order for me to drag here strangling me even though you don't know the Bible?" and my mother couldn't say anything.

◆ On Jan. 24, pressure to sign consent form of coercive conversion program

On this day, pastor Kwon and my father came and threatened me to sign consent form of coercive conversion program. my parents told me "If you want to get out, sign and take the program.". I said "I'm not going to sign and I don't want to hear.". 

Pastor Kwon said ok and tried to leave the studio alone leaving me in prison. So, I tried to say in front of my parents "I'm going out since he said he is not educating me." However, the hooligans blocked me in front of my parents. I urgently grabbed pastor Kwon's wrist and asked to let me go resisting them. While I and my parents were quarreling, pastor Kwon left the studio. I thought that if I didn't sign, the period of stay in the studio would increase. I felt greater fear against the surveillance and threats of hooligans. 

◆ During Jan 25 ~26 forcible participation in coercive conversion program 

I said to my mother and hooligans saying "I don't understand why I should sign consent form of conversion program.". They told me that I must sign so that the program would end early. and I decided to negotiate. 

I came to negotiate saying 'I will use the gym near the studio. I'm not going to run away. Wouldn't it be OK if I go with hooligans? I will sign if this condition is met.'. 

I was very frustrated because this program is very coercive and takes place until these conditions are met. However, I thought it might be a chance to run away. After that, I met pastor Kwon who was in charge of coercive conversion program and had to face 3 sessions. I heard many stories through the program but the stories were not objectively understood. 

I also learned that they only unilaterally criticize and slander without being able to biblically explain the exact answer. So, I was very upset because of pastor Kwon's act knowing that there are many other victims besides me. 

◆ On Feb. 4 conveying a SOS note, rescued by the police

At around 4 PM, I asked 3 questions during coercive conversion program with pastor Kwon. First question is why they are doing this coercive conversion locking people up. Second question is why they took my cell phone away. Third question is why they are doing this for. Here is the answer I heard. 

The answer was "Since Shincheonji keeps in touch, it intervenes in this program. As a result, people are not able to objectively engage in the program. So, we take the cell phone and process the program in a closed studio. And, the reason I do this is because this is the way of the Lord.".

On that day, I was rescued by the police. On the day which I was able to use the public restroom in the same building that I was confined, I threw a SOS note. The person who saw the note reported it to the police. The police came to the studio after the report was filed and I was barely rescued.
