Improving the Living Environment of Elderly Vulnerable to Heatwaves

In Baekseokcheon, Ganeung-dong, Uijeongbu, a meaningful volunteer activity was carried out to support elderly residents struggling in the recent heatwave. On August 17, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch, led by Director Kim Woo-hwi, visited the homes of seniors to check electrical wiring and repair outdated appliances. Despite the scorching weather, the volunteers dedicated their efforts to improving the living environment of the elderly.

The volunteer group not only checked electrical wiring but also repaired fans and reinforced rooftops. These efforts aimed to ensure that elderly residents could live more safely and comfortably during the intense summer heat. Many of the seniors expressed both surprise and gratitude for the unexpected help.

One resident, Ms. Park Soon-deok (80, pseudonym), said she was delighted after receiving help with refrigerator maintenance, bathroom repairs, and wiring replacements. “Just having someone come to help me like this makes me truly happy,” she shared. Another resident, Mr. Lee Dae-gi (80, pseudonym), expressed deep gratitude, saying he now feels safer after volunteers repaired his broken fan and replaced faulty wiring.

The volunteers from the Uijeongbu branch expressed how rewarding it felt to help the elderly spend a safer and cooler summer. They added, “Even though it was hot, serving together and sweating alongside one another was touching in itself.” Their warm hearts left a positive impact throughout the community.

A representative of the Uijeongbu branch emphasized that the volunteer work went beyond simple technical assistance. “From now on, we will continue to serve in a way that not only provides practical help but also eases loneliness by sharing love and communication with the elderly,” he stated. This initiative became a meaningful effort that delivered both safety and compassion to seniors vulnerable to extreme heat.
