We Are One Incheon Association Leads Summer Blood Shortage Relief

The We Are One Incheon Regional Association of the Youth Volunteer Group has taken action to address unstable blood supply during the summer holiday season. On August 14, a day before Korea’s Independence Day, the first group blood donation event kicked off at Bupyeong Park. Youth members who participated not only donated blood but also created a “Taegukgi Handprint” to commemorate the day. This initiative went beyond simple sharing, embodying both historical remembrance and community spirit.

The blood donation bus will operate in a relay format for four weeks, with seven branches including Incheon, West Incheon, and Mansu taking part every Friday. On-site, volunteers are not only encouraging blood donation but also promoting the Korean Red Cross donation app “RedConnect.” These combined efforts contribute both to stabilizing the blood supply and spreading a more accessible, tech-based culture of donation.

We Are One has set a nationwide goal of 10,000 donations between July and October, with the Incheon branch targeting 600 participants. In just three weeks, 180 youth have already taken part, showing tangible results early on. The continuous dedication and enthusiasm of these young volunteers are becoming the driving force behind overcoming the summer blood shortage.

Kim Hyun-ji (alias, 26, Yeonsu-gu), who has been active since 2022, shared that blood donation has also brought personal change. “Through We Are One, I realized the importance of blood supply and became motivated to participate voluntarily. There were days I couldn’t donate due to low iron levels, but it pushed me to manage my health better.” For many young volunteers, participation in blood donation has become more than service—it is also a step toward self-care.

Kim Young-seop, director of the Korean Red Cross Incheon Blood Center, highlighted the significance of We Are One’s efforts. “It is a reality that participation in blood donation decreases during vacation and holiday seasons, but We Are One’s youth stand out by independently planning campaigns, creating promotional content, and inspiring others to join,” he said. The proactive movement of these young people is generating a positive ripple effect across society in tackling the blood shortage crisis.
