Shincheonji Volunteer Group Mobilizes Over 200 Volunteers to Collect 20 Tons of Marine Waste
On October 16th, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch (led by Director Kim Chung-gil) carried out a marine debris cleanup at Manseongni Beach (Black Sand Beach) in Manheung-dong, Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.
The activity aimed to remove large amounts of waste washed into the sea after heavy rainfall, drawing strong support from the local community.
Because Manseongni Beach is located near the lower reaches of the Seomjin River, massive amounts of debris such as buoys, styrofoam, wood, plastics, and household waste had been washed ashore. In response to a request from Yeosu City and the Mandeok-dong Community Center, around 200 volunteers from the Yeosu Branch participated, collecting approximately 20 tons of marine waste in just two hours.
Volunteer Kim Ji-ae (40s, Yeosu) said, “The amount of trash seemed endless, which made me realize how serious the problem is. Despite the hot weather, I felt proud knowing we were protecting the sea. If we all sort our waste properly and reduce single-use items, problems like this can be greatly reduced.”
Tourist Yoo Seok-hoon (30s, from Daegu) said, “I was impressed by the volunteers working so hard in the heat. Thanks to their effort, the beach looks much cleaner now.”
A representative from the Yeosu Branch explained, “This cleanup campaign was part of our ongoing effort to prepare for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo. We plan to continue collaborating with local authorities to protect Yeosu’s beautiful environment.”
Meanwhile, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Yeosu Branch has been conducting promotional and environmental campaigns since last year to support the success of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, which will be held from September 5 to November 4, 2026, under the theme “Connecting Islands, the Sea, and the Future.”
