Living Conditions for Elderly Vulnerable to Heat

Amid the ongoing heatwave, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch (led by Director Kim Woo-hwi) reached out to elderly residents living alone near Baekseokcheon in Ganeung-dong, Uijeongbu, to offer practical help. Volunteers carried out a range of activities such as repairing old electrical appliances, fixing rooftops, and checking fans and wiring, all aimed at improving living conditions. Their heartfelt service helped ensure that seniors could spend the summer more safely and comfortably.

Park Soon-deok (80, pseudonym), a resident of Ganeung-dong, said with a smile, “I’m so grateful that they helped me with everything — from checking the refrigerator to repairing the bathroom and replacing the wires.” Another resident, Lee Dae-gi (80, pseudonym), added, “They even fixed my broken fan and replaced the electrical cords, so now I can stay safe.” What may seem like small repairs became a source of great comfort and happiness for the elderly living alone.

The Baekseokcheon area in Ganeung-dong, Uijeongbu, was once designated as a redevelopment zone in 2011 but later lifted in 2014. Despite being close to the city center, it remains a densely populated area with aging homes and limited infrastructure, leaving many seniors vulnerable. In response, the Uijeongbu Branch carefully inspected homes and conducted customized volunteer services to improve living conditions.

One volunteer said, “It was rewarding to help elderly residents spend the summer a little safer and cooler despite the heat. Even though it was hot, sweating together while serving felt truly heartwarming.’ The compassion and teamwork created a sense of warmth stronger than the summer heat.

A representative from the Uijeongbu Branch said, “We worked with local community leaders to prepare repair tools and supplies in advance. Going forward, we plan to extend our activities beyond technical support to include emotional care and communication with the elderly.” The Shincheonji Volunteer Group Uijeongbu Branch will continue to share warmth and compassion so that no senior feels alone.
