Okpo International Market Environmental Cleanup Campaign Brings New Vitality to the Traditional Market
The Geoje Branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group carried out a meaningful environmental cleanup campaign for the local community in and around Okpo International Market and nearby commercial areas in Geoje City.
During the campaign, volunteers collected various types of litter discarded inside the market and throughout the surrounding commercial district. A total of 28 members participated in the volunteer effort, spending approximately three hours gathering household waste such as cigarette butts, plastic items, and vinyl materials. The total amount of waste collected that day was approximately 200 liters.
Traditional markets offer a wide variety of foods, as well as groceries and daily necessities. Therefore, maintaining clean streets can enhance the satisfaction of citizens visiting the market and contribute to revitalizing the local economy. In addition, a campaign promoting the importance of environmental protection was conducted alongside the cleanup activity.
After the cleanup activity, the volunteers visited shops within the market and purchased goods, joining efforts to support and revitalize the traditional market. One merchant at the scene said, “Thanks to the volunteers' dedicated efforts, the market streets became noticeably cleaner and more organized. I was even more grateful that they shopped here after volunteering, which helped boost business for local merchants. It seems that creating a cleaner market environment while encouraging people to use traditional markets has had a positive impact on the local commercial district.”
Yeom Dong-il, head of the Geoje Branch, said, “We hope this activity has made even a small contribution to creating a cleaner and more vibrant traditional market. We will continue to carry out volunteer activities that not only promote environmental cleanliness but also support local businesses and the regional economy.”
It is hoped that environmental cleanup activities and community partnership projects like this will continue in the future, serving as an opportunity to bring about positive change for many people.
