[Shincheonji Volunteer] “Worried About Wildfires, So I Took Action” – Clean-Up and Wildfire Prevention Campaign at Mt. Dodeok in Gwangmyeong
As the warm spring breeze arrives, outdoor activities become more frequent—but so does the risk of wildfires. In fact, from 2015 to the past 10 years, nearly 46% of all wildfires occurred in March and April. This makes wildfire prevention in spring an issue we can’t afford to overlook.
On March 27, the Shincheonji Volunteer Gwangmyeong Branch took meaningful action to help prevent wildfires and protect the environment by organizing a clean-up campaign at Mt. Dodeok in Gwangmyeong City.
Twenty members of Gwangmyeong Church participated in the event, cleaning up a 1.5km section of trail from the mountain entrance to a path frequently used by local residents. For nearly three hours, volunteers collected trash and dried leaves, working hard to create a cleaner and safer forest environment.
After the clean-up, the volunteers held signs displaying wildfire prevention guidelines and conducted a public awareness campaign for hikers. The signs included messages such as:
ㆍ No illegal trash burning
ㆍ No smoking and proper disposal of cigarette butts
ㆍ Report wildfires immediately when spotted
Ms. Song Myeong-ae (64, Gwangmyeong 7-dong), one of the participants, shared, “This year, I saw so many wildfire reports on the news that I started to feel really concerned. Realizing that a small mistake can lead to major damage motivated me to take part in this clean-up. I want to keep volunteering to help prevent wildfires.”
Mr. Ji Sang-ho, Deputy Branch Manager of the Gwangmyeong branch, also said, “Hearing about recent wildfire damages made me realize how important prevention is. I felt this campaign was especially meaningful because even a small effort can have a big impact. I’m grateful we could contribute, and we plan to continue local clean-up efforts.”
This volunteer event was not only about cleaning the mountain—it was a powerful opportunity to share the importance of wildfire prevention with the community. As we head into spring, let’s all take small steps to ensure safe and enjoyable hikes for everyone.
