Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gumi Branch Conducts Cleanup Activity at Gumi Stream
On the 18th, the Gumi Branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group carried out a cleanup activity at Gumi Stream as part of the clean up campaign. Considering that trash and sediment accumulated during winter can cause water pollution during thawing seasons or heavy rains, this activity was organized as a preventive environmental effort. It was a meaningful opportunity to care for the stream before seasonal changes.
Volunteers focused their cleanup efforts on the section from Wonji Bridge to Wonji 2nd Bridge, including the stream and nearby tree-lined paths. Even hard-to-spot trash was carefully collected by hand, and as a result, a total of 375 liters of waste was removed. Although it covered a considerable distance, the site remained energetic thanks to the volunteers’ shared commitment.
Since joining the “One Company, One River” campaign launched by Gumi City in 2012, the Gumi Branch has been responsible for a 1-kilometer section of Gumi Stream—from Doryang Bridge to Gumi Bridge—since 2014. Monthly cleanup activities have continued without interruption, giving even greater meaning to this long-term commitment rather than one-time volunteer work.
Over the past decade, more than 2,300 volunteers have participated in these activities, collecting approximately 40,000 liters of waste. These efforts have contributed not only to improving water quality but also to preserving the stream’s ecosystem. It was a clear reminder that small actions, when combined, can create meaningful change.
A local resident from Jisan-dong, who happened to pass by, said, “I didn’t realize the stream was being cleaned every month. Thanks to this, citizens can enjoy a pleasant daily walk.” Volunteer Kim Kyung-ju also shared, “Doing cleanup activities together is enjoyable and rewarding,” expressing her intention to continue participating.
Lee Won-ho, head of the Gumi Branch, stated, “Based on our experience of consistently caring for Gumi Stream, we will continue environmental protection activities with a strong sense of responsibility.” These steady efforts for Gumi Stream are expected to continue into the future.
