The Weeds Left Behind by Heavy Rain Around Balsan Station...

Reborn Through the Helping Hands of Shincheonji Youth Volunteers!

A few days ago, heavy rainfall hit the area around Balsan Station in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. As a result, weeds grew rapidly. In particular, weeds had become thick around the green spaces and even between the cracks of sidewalk blocks. 

At 3 p.m., when the sun was at its strongest, 70 members of the Gangseo Branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group gathered around Balsan Station for a volunteer cleanup activity. Wearing work gloves and carrying tongs, large collection sacks, and pruning shears, they focused on cleaning up the green spaces and pedestrian walkways.

The sound of pulling weeds, the rustling of trash being placed into large sacks, and the brief conversations exchanged among the volunteers filled the streets. The piles of weeds quickly filled several sacks, while everyday litter such as cigarette butts, paper cups, and plastic bags was collected as well. 

The area around Balsan Station has a high volume of pedestrian traffic. The volunteers therefore focused their efforts on the routes most frequently used by pedestrians. After about an hour of work, the walkways had become noticeably cleaner and more comfortable to walk along.

One volunteer said, “It was rewarding to personally take care of a road I frequently use and feel that I had made even a small contribution to the local community. I hope to continue participating in activities like this so that residents can enjoy a cleaner and more pleasant environment.”

Another volunteer shared, “I felt proud to see the streets become noticeably cleaner after removing the weeds. With so many volunteers working together, we were able to make a significant difference in a relatively short amount of time.”

A local business owner near Balsan Station also expressed appreciation, saying, “During the summer, weeds grow so quickly that the streets can look untidy. It is nice to see the area cleaned up so neatly. I am grateful to everyone who volunteered for the benefit of local residents.”

A representative of the Gangseo Branch said, “A clean urban environment is directly connected to the quality of life of all residents, so we will continue our efforts to improve the environment through activities in our everyday surroundings.” The representative also expressed the branch’s intention to continue its other community service activities.

Perhaps meaningful volunteer work can begin with something as simple as doing one small thing for the community where we live.
