The murder caused by the coercive conversion
catching attention of international society...
Human Rights Committee must step up

The Pew Research Center, a non-profit research organization in the United States, classified Korea as one of two countries where social hostility caused by religion has increased significantly. On the basis of that, they introduced that more than 120,000 people protested against the coercive conversion when a report came out in South Korea in 2018 that a couple killed their daughter while trying to forcibly convert their daughter's religion. The daughter who died at the time was Ji-in Gu, a member of Shincheonji. t is peculiar that the international community has paid attention to the murder victim of Shincheonji member for the coercive conversion.

In fact, it is a national embarrassment that there are people dying for “religious freedom” in a liberal democratic country. Gu Ji In was the second in the murder victim due to the coercive conversion.

Even though Shincheonji did not commit a crime, a member of Shincheonji is recognized as being the subject of being treated as a criminal. This is more than just the mistake of vested interests, the influence of politicians who use this atmosphere as a tool to gain votes is greater.

The victims of the coercive conversion are a minority and the socially weak. Trapped in the shadow of prejudice, it is difficult to properly reveal themselves as a Shincheonji member. In many cases, if you report the fact of damage due to coercive conversion to the police and appeal to the Human Rights Committee, it is common to hear the absurd answer because it is a family problem or a religious problem so, we should solve it on our own. In the end, the national neglect against anti-constitutional religious repression is killing the people.

The government and the public authorities, who are supposed to protect the lives of the people are repeating the action that they satisfy to obtain the vote of vested interests by scapegoating a few. For this reason, coercive conversion, which is a tremendous oppression of human rights against humanity, continues to persist, creating a more embarrassing situation for perpetrators being confident.

The most effective way to combat inhumane crimes such as the coercive conversion is through severe punishment for the perpetrator. Even children over the age of 20 are adults with self-determination, and their judgment should be respected.

There is no right to kill or force conversion through violence simply because the children's beliefs are not the same as parents or family members.

Moreover, freedom of religion is a natural human right, and President Moon Jae In promised to strengthen basic rights. With words crying out for a world without discrimination, contradictory political actions that only allow “religious freedom” for my convenience should be stopped. Maybe it's too late. But, even now, the National Human Rights Committee should clarify the reality of coercive conversion that tramples on the human rights of the people because of religious hostility and make recommendations.
