A pastor guilty for spreading the list of 4,000 Shincheonji members

A pastor who illegally distributed the list of Shincheonji church members(chairman Man Hee Lee) was sentenced to prison.

According to the legal circle on the 9th, the Daejeon District Court sentenced pastor Lee to 8 months in prison with a stay of execution for two years and 360 hours in community service for delivering personal information files of 4,549 members of the Shincheonji Daejeon Church to his wife and distributing them to Internet cafes.

Pastor Lee kept a list of nationwide Shincheonji believers' personal information. When Covid19 spread in February last year, pastor Lee's wife asked for a list of Shincheonji believers  to check if there were any nearby Shincheonji believers. Pastor Lee pulled out the list of 4,500 Shincheonji believers in Daejeon and delivered it.

The court pointed out that the wife uploaded the file to the Kakao Talk group chat room of her company employees where she works, allowing many unspecified people to access the above personal information.

The court stressed, "If personal information is leaked, the crime of personal information leakage is heavy because it can cause secondary damage such as indiscriminate commercial use or abuse of various crimes such as identity theft and phone fraud."

It was also pointed out, "The list of 4,500 people sent by the defendant contained their names, addresses and phone numbers, so the amount of personal information leaked is huge."

The court said, "The leakage of personal information caused mental damage and the risk of exposure to crimes using personal information. In fact, the subjects of personal information on the list complained of damage from personal information exposed.

An official from the Shincheonji Jesus Church said, "With the outbreak of Corona 19 last year, damage of the personal information leakage was serious. Some of them suffered from job dismissal, recommended resignation, bullying, and getting tons of text messages."

In addition, the official emphasized that "I understand that the list was shared among pastors. This includes the resident registration number. It was illegally collected. Keeping the list itself is a criminal act. It must be disposed of immediately."
