Youth volunteer group 'We are One' started the largest-ever blood donation of 70,000 people
To resolve the blood supply and demand difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decreased blood donation during the holiday season, a youth volunteer group 'We Are One, Representative Hong Joon-soo' launched a blood donation campaign for 3 months which is the largest blood donation of 70,000 people.
The youth volunteer group 'We are One' announced that they will conduct the 'Life ON YOUTH ON blood donation campaign' at blood centers located in 17 metropolitan councils across the country from last 27th. If the blood donation of 70,000 people, which is unprecedented in the world, is completed as planned, the domestic blood supply and demand is expected to remain stable until the end of this year.
According to the 'Blood Donation Statistical Yearbook', blood donation last year was 2.6 million, down 0.3% from the previous year. The trend continues to decline from 2.88 million in 2018 to 2.79 million in 2019 and 2.61 million in 2020. In particular, in February, when Omicron spread, the domestic blood supply and demand dropped to less than three-days supply, much lower than the normal five-day supply, resulting in a blood supply emergency. Until COVID-19 is stabilized, blood supply and demand are unstable.
As this situation continues, the number of designated blood donations where patients and guardians who need urgent operation directly seek blood donors is also increasing rapidly. The number of designated blood donations doubled from the previous year, from 77,151 in 2020 to 142,355 in 2021.
According to the blood management headquarters of the Korean Red Cross, blood supply and demand are affected a lot by the season. In August, due to vacation and hot weather, the amount of blood is reduced to 3.5 days. In addition, with the re-spread of Corona 19 and the early Chuseok holiday, a stable blood donation supply is urgently needed for the next several months. As the resurgence of COVID-19 and Chuseok holiday starts, stable blood donation supply and demand are urgently needed for the next few months.
Representative Hong Joon Soo of 'We are one' said "After COVID-19, as the blood reserves drastically decreased, to get surgery and treatment right away, I've come across a lot of SNS where patients and their guardians are directly asking for blood donations. In a situation where the spread of COVID-19 is unpredictable, we have decided to carry out a large-scale blood donation of 70,000 people to stabilize the supply and demand of blood."
On the 28th, the first day of the WeAreOne blood donation campaign, Park Gi Hong, head of the blood donation department of the Korean Red Cross Blood Management Headquarters, visited the Dongbu Blood Center of the Korean Red Cross in Nowon-gu, Seoul and said "In August, it is a particularly difficult time to supply blood due to a decrease in the blood donation population because of school vacations and vacation season for office workers. Blood is currently maintained for about four days, and blood type O is at risk for about three days."
He continued, "The blood donation of 70,000 people is a huge number not only in Korea but also in the world and is beyond imagination. Thank you for hosting a massive blood donation event during the most difficult times. I predict that there will be an atmosphere where we don't have to worry about blood donation until the end of this year."
On the first day of the campaign alone, about 3,500 WeAreOne members from all over the country visited each local blood center to donate blood. And among them, about 2,700 of them completed the blood donation. All donor cards and donation certificates secured by the 70,000 blood donation campaign will be donated to necessary places in each region.
WeAreOne has come up with a plan to allow the general public who want to participate in the meaningful activity of "the world's largest blood donation" to participate as "honorary members." An official of WeAreOne said "Currently, 100,000 people have applied for blood donation, including honorary members. Like the name of the volunteer group, 'We Are One', we will work together to overcome the difficulties of our society.
WeAreOne is a youth volunteer group launched on July 30 with a total of 90,000 people, including 70,000 in Korea and 20,000 overseas. WeAreOne recently visited flood damaged areas caused by heavy rain carried out volunteer work to recover flood damage.
