A Beautiful Encounter of Faith and Art:
Conveying the Word Through Dance
One day, a young girl’s heart was stirred as she happened upon a dance performance. Captivated by the elegance of a dance troupe moving to the melody of the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang,” she eventually set her life on the path of dance. That journey, however, would become more than just a pursuit of art—it would turn into a special road paved with faith and love.
Seo Hyun Lee(alias), a 22-year-old believer, is currently majoring in classical Korean dance while actively serving as a member of the dance troupe at the Bucheon Church of the Bartholomew Tribe of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. Her dance is more than a series of movements—it is akin to a form of worship that embodies the depth of her faith.
▎ The Journey of Faith and Art Began with the Little Art Troupe
Seo Hyun’s journey into dance began with a warm and simple story. When she was 11 years old, her mother—already a church member—introduced her to the "Little Art Troupe" after hearing her daughter express a desire to experience dance and make friends at church. Through preparing performances and synchronizing every move and gaze with her fellow troupe members, Seo Hyun learned the importance of unity and the value of expression.
She found deeper meaning as she took part in church events like family invitation performances. She witnessed how some audience members, who had come with preconceived notions, were moved to tears after watching the performance. It was then that she realized dance could be a medium for delivering powerful messages—messages that could touch hearts.
▎ Dance Immersed in the Word—Embodying the Depth of Faith
Having gone on to attend an arts high school and now majoring in classical dance, Seo Hyun sees her calling not just in performing beautiful traditional art, but in expressing the Word of God through movement. At Shincheonji Church, many dance pieces are centered on biblical themes, aiming to visually communicate God’s message to the audience.
In a recent family invitation event, she took part in a performance based on the hopeful conclusion of the Book of Revelation. She conveyed emotions such as joy, gratitude, and hope through each movement and facial expression. Preparing for this piece led her to study the Word even more deeply.
“The more I stay close to the Word, the more I’m moved by it. And that makes me want to share that grace and love sincerely with the audience,” she said. From her words, one can sense that her reason for being on stage stems from her faith as much as from her art.
▎ Moving Forward as a Dancer Who Touches Hearts
Seo Hyun Lee expressed her hope that more people will open their hearts, find joy, and feel moved through the performances she’s a part of. To achieve that, she is determined to continue growing as a dancer with richer expression and deeper emotional connection.
Dance is an art form that conveys emotion without words. Yet, her stage speaks a bigger message. It was faith.
To some, dance may be a performance. But to Seo Hyun, it is a confession of faith and an act of love. We look forward to the day when her heartfelt message reaches even more people.
